hobbies & interests

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy... with a lot of expendable income."
I could be easily described by that first part... the second part, not so much.
I was going to say that I don't really have a lot of hobbies anymore, but upon reflection that's not really accurate.
A list of all the things that I either enjoy doing or continue to research and learn about would go something like this:
  • History
    • Specifically,
      • The American Civil War.
      • The Second World War.

  • No Limit Texas Hold 'Em
    • Tournament play is my preference... I still need to work on my cash game.

  • Chess
    • Sad to think I may have peaked in 5th and 6th grade, when I was the first at my elementary school to win back-to-back school tournaments and even beat the teacher who ran the tournaments.

  • Bodybuilding / Fitness
    • I could almost copy & paste my chess comments here, but in reality I think I peaked in my late 20's / early 30's.
      • I grudgingly admit this is one hobby I find really hard to maintain right now.
        • For me, it's always harder to do something when you "have to do it" vs "want to do it."

  • Computer Gaming
    • Skyrim still rocks my world.
    • Sid Meier's Civilization game has been a favorite since Civ II.
      • I don't yet consistently win playing Civ V, so I'm hesitant to leave it behind for the new Civ VII release, but at the rate I'm going by the time I really master Civ V they'll probably be on Civ X.
    • Dogs of War is an Axis and Allies knockoff that I still play when time allows.
      • One of my clients gifted me a copy of World At War, which I would describe as Dogs of War on steroids, but I have yet to sit and really give it a go.
    • Doom, Crysis and Star Wars games are still dear to my heart, but the time to play is so limited that I haven't even bothered installing them on any of my current systems.

  • Technology
    • Linux
      • There's still a lot for me to learn about Linux, but I've become a real fan and haven't used Windows as my primary desktop operating system since 2015.
      • I spent a brief period of time distro-hopping during much of 2016, but eventually I settled on Mint with XFCE as my go-to desktop environment.
      • I recently downloaded and installed AnduinOS on a virtual machine to test the viability of suggesting it to some of my clients who want a "Windows experience" without the constant headache of Microsoft being included.
        • I may post updates on the 1Geek4U website if I conclude it might be a viable alternative for those tired of dealing with Windows.
